Black Sand Publishing Inc (BSP), in partnership with Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores Inc (Hankyu) and the State of Hawaii / Dept of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, is pleased to announce a Call For Artists (CFA) opportunity. This CFA will be an online, open-competition opportunity to allow Hawai'i artists to apply to have their art curated, represented, and sold in the Hankyu Umeda Hawaii Fair 2020, occurring this summer (July 8-20) in Osaka, Japan.
The Hankyu Umeda Hawaii Fair is one of the largest out-of-state Hawai'i fair, and attracts more than 215,000 Japanese consumers every year and sells food, apparel, gifts and jewelry items made in Hawai'i. Hankyu Umeda carries name brand products and is regarded as one of the higher quality department stores in Japan. The Fair is organized annually by Hankyu Umeda, with support from the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) through its Hawai'i State Trade Expansion Program (HiSTEP). This program provides training seminars, direct financial assistance and organizes Hawai'i Pavilions at Mainland and overseas venues.
Hankyu Umeda is hosting a new Hawai'i Fair art concept called “Affordable Art Prints”, to be organized and managed by Black Sand Publishing, whereby affordably priced fine art paper prints will be promoted and sold in a dedicated art section of the Hawaii Fair. The goal is to offer a wider variety of Hawai'i artists to Japanese buyers, and at an affordable price point averaging around $99 USD (plus or minus) to encourage many sales. Selected original artwork will also be offered, and Grand Prize artists will be attending and participating in the Fair.
The fine art paper prints will be using a variety of papers, sizes and price points, suitable for high quality reproduction of a variety of mediums. Papers will include cotton rag watercolor, and a selection of photography papers. Most papers will be sourced from Hahnemuhle, a premier fine art paper manufacturer. Art prints will be finished in multiple ways, including deckled, matted and bagged prints. Some framed prints may also be displayed. Consistent retail prices will be established to average around $99 USD, depending on the size and assembly of the prints. BSP will work with selected artists to define final images and matching paper/assembly specifications.
There are multiple awards being offered to selected Artists, as the goal of this program is to reach and support more of the local art community, and also share a broader variety of Hawai'i art with Japan.
The theme of this art program is “What I Love About Hawai'i”. This can be represented in art by the Artist as what you love most about Hawaii – people, physical beauty (waves, beaches, ocean, landscape), or more abstract emotional and spiritual connections. Submitted art must show a relationship to this theme, and support the concept of promoting Hawai'i’s natural beauty and tropical lifestyle.
The following art mediums are acceptable for this Call For Artists (only digital files will be submitted for now):
