Black Sand Publishing Inc (BSP) is pleased to announce a Call For Artists (CFA) opportunity. This CFA will be an online, open-competition opportunity to allow Hawaii artists to apply to have their art curated, represented, and sold in the Hankyu Umeda Hawaii Fair, occurring this summer (July 8-20, 2020) in Osaka, Japan.

SCHEDULE

  • February 1 - First day to submit CFA application
  • February 29 - Last day to submit CFA application
  • March 15 - Jury judges entries and assigns Awards
  • March 31 - artist agreements signed
  • May 1 - original art due at Black Sand Publishing
  • July 8-20 - Hankyu Hawaii Fair (art gallery) opens
  • Sept 15 - royalties and commissions paid to Artists

AWARDS

Grand Prize - Free Japan trip for (4) selected Artists – includes free round-trip to Osaka (air travel & lodging) to attend the Fair for up to 8 days / 6 nights. Does not include food, entertainment, or local transportation.  Awarded artist will be scheduled to participate in the Hankyu Hawaii Fair, to represent their art and engage with customers.  Two Grand Prize artists will participate July 8-12, and two artists will participate July 15-19.

Awards of Excellence - Opportunity for up to 20 Artists to license their art for sale as fine art prints.

Gallery Exhibition Opportunity for up to 5 Artists to have their original paintings represented and sold.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Artist must be over 18 years old, living and working in Hawaii
  • Artist must be professional (“actively selling art”) or student
  • Art mediums accepted: {paintings, digital art, photography}
  • No nudity, obscenity, violence, etc, all art must be tasteful and be a positive representation of Hawaii’s image.
  • Original (source) art for licensing should be no older than 2 years.
  • Original art for sale should be no older than 6 months.
  • Art must not be previously shown in Japan
  • Artist must have created the art and own all copyrights, and be able and willing to license usage rights to BSP for this Fair. Artist will retain ownership of all copyrights.
  • Grand Prize Artists must have a valid passport (expiration date no eaerlier than Ocvtober 20, 2020) and be able to travel to Japan during the Hankyu Hawaii Fair July dates.

SUBMISSION

  • One Application per person only (up to 7 images may be submitted with each Application)
  • Submissions may be revised up to the final deadline date
  • Digital files submitted must be high-quality, un-cropped captures with sharp detail and accurate color, with no large watermarks or overlay graphics (images should be cropped to not show frames or any background).  The files do not have to be "print-ready" sizes.
  • Judges will evaluate and grade each Artists' submission, and the highest graded Artists will be selected for participation and award of prizes. Judges’ selections and decisions will be final. In the event any selected Artist is unable to complete a licensing agreement, provide original art or accept a Grand Prize, an alternate Artist will be selected.

JUDGING & CRITERIA

  • There will be 6 judges, representing both Hawaii and Japan, from the Organizer, Sponsors and public.  Final judge names wil be announced before the Deadline.
  • Scoring criteria will include the following:
    • Adherence to the Theme (What I Love About Hawaii);
    • Originality of concept
    • Compelling idea (emotional impact)
    • Creativity
    • Composition
    • Technique (craftsmenship)
    • Commercial viablity to sell to a Japanese audience

ARTWORK

  • Art Prints
    • Licensing agreement with Artists to print and sell giclee art prints during the Hankyu Hawaii Fair
    • Artists to provide hi-res digital art files
    • BSP will manage all production and shipping costs
    • Printing on premium, fine art archival watercolor or photo papers
    • Print formats
      • Matted prints (with backer board, in bag)
      • Unmatted prints (with backer board, in bag)
      • Popular sizes (11”x14”, 12”x12”, 12”x16”, 12”x18”, 10”x20”)
    • Pricing – consistent pricing per size/material for all artists
    • Artist credit
      • Artist signature/logo on front of print
      • Artist bio on back show sticker
  • Original Art
    • Program focus is on “small artwork”
    • 2D originals – oil, acrylic, mixed media
    • Max size 16”x20” (including any frame)
    • Max Retail Price up to $2,000 USD
    • Art should be ready-to-hang (frame must be provided if needed)
    • BSP will insure art while in its possession

VENUE

The Hankyu Hawaii Fair will be held at the Hankyu Umeda department store in Osaka, Japan, on the 9th floor, from July 8-20, 2020.

FINANCIALS

  • Fees & Costs
    • Non-refundable submission fee of $20 USD
      • Upon selection, Artist and BSP will execute a license and define print specifications.
      • All print production costs, shipping and Hankyu show costs to be paid by BSP
      • Assistance digitizing artwork (if needed) is available from Chromaco with a CFA discount
  • Art
    • Accepted artists will receive royalties on art print sales
    • Cost of prints/production to be borne by Black Sand Publishing
    • Royalty rates:
      • Prints - 20% to Artist
      • Originals – 40% to Artist
      • Excludes non-print sales such as shipping, tax.
    • Print specs – retail pricing, size, format -– to be decided jointly by Artist and Black Sand Publishing
    • Target retail price points $40-200 USD
  • Design costs
    • No payment or reimbursements for design work, painting, submission or transport
    • Artist is responsible for shipping or delivering & picking up original artwork to/from BSP’s offices in Honolulu.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Unsold print inventory – will be sold in Japan in subsequent festivals or through retail; royalties to be reported/paid quarterly.
  • Unsold originals – returned to BSP/Hawaii for pickup.
  • Artist info and art images to be used for BSP and Hankyu marketing purposes – web sites, social media, public media (newspapers, magazines, radio), advertising, show posters, show signage.
